Parkville v Castle United

Parkville 1 - 6 Castle United

A pair of hat tricks from Ruby Farrell and Clodagh Leahy helped Castle United U12 girls to a solid win in Martinstown this afternoon and bring down the curtain on a very entertaining season for the girls. After some initial confusion about the venue for the game, Castle began the match fielding the minimum 9 players so the girls had it all to do in the very warm conditions. Right from the off the girls got stuck in and were rewarded in the 4th minute with and excellent Ruby Farrell finish who deceived the Parkville offside trap to scorch home the opener. However it wasn’t all one way traffic, with Parkville pressing hard looking for their opener, their number 8 in particular posing a particular threat. Indeed they should have had their opener in the 10th minute when their striker bombed forward, only to be thwarted by ‘keeper Caoimhe O’Connor who looked comfortable all day in the nets. Castle made it 2-0 though on 18 minutes when a surging run from outside her own penalty box saw Clodagh Leahy turn on the afterburners down the pitch and blast the ball into the net. However a quick reply saw Parkville get off the mark with a crisp finish from just inside the box leaving the Castle defence wondering. Wisely referee Moss Lynch allowed for water stops half way through each half, such was the heat of the day. Parkville had a couple of great chances with one shot skimming the cross bar and couple of efforts just wide. 2-1 at half time and all to play for. In the second half, Caste set about their passing game which was beginning to look the part now. Team Captain Jane O’Dwyer, playing an excellent holding midfield role in front of the back three, found midfielder Meabh Leahy who played a neat pass to Ruby Farrell in the box on the 35th minute. A neat touch to beat the defender and a crisp shot saw Castle 3-1 up and looking good now. However Parkville didn’t come all the way from Co. Clare to make up the numbers and stout defending by the industrious trio of Tianna O’Sullivan at centre back, supported by wing backs Eve O’Donnell and Katie Cosgrove was required to ensure victory would be ours. Strong tackling from right side midfielder Karen Guerin, who put in a huge shift all day, was required in the final quarter as legs now began to tire all round; however it wasn’t the 9 girl team of Castle but the visitors who now seemed to be flagging. Perhaps the secret weapon of ice water and mi-wadi from eagle eyed parents at the second water stop was the difference with a brace of goals from Ruby, to secure her hat trick, and a second from Clodagh, was enough the see the visitors off. Parkville did have a couple of chances to add to their tally late on but quick thinking goal keeping by Caoimhe O’Connor was enough to ensure she wasn’t going to be beaten a second time today. Right at the death Clodagh sealed her own hat trick with a thunderous drive that gave the Parkville keeper no chance.

An excellent morning’s entertainment and well done to the girls for an excellent season as they continue to improve and build their skills in the game. Big thanks also to Parkville who facilitated us by agreeing to reschedule this fixture to today.

What a fitting way to end the season in glorious sun shine, with ice cream, and good football. Thanks for all who helped out today; now hang up the boots for a while and enjoy the summer.
