U12 Girls in Gaynor cup qualifier

After winning the NTSFL Inter League tournament last time out, the Limerick County u12’s girls ETP squad travelled to Abbeyfeale on Sunday last to take part in the qualiers to play on Gaynor Cup week.

With a strong panel full of confidence, hopes were high of a strong showing in this tournament, where only the winners would take their place in late June.

The first match up was against the Clare league, and the girls were very strong winning 2-0, thanks to goals from Jodie Griffin and Zoe Reeves Wasik.

Next up was Galway who were arguably the tournament favourites, but this certainly didn’t deter our girls who took the attack to the opposition keeping them under pressure constantly with our attacks. However a cruel twist allowed Galway get a rather fortunate goal from a corner when a spinning ball went through numerous legs leaving our keeper and captain Kelsey Reeves unsighted until very late, giving her no chance of preveting it going into the net. Our girls pressed and pressed but could not get the equaliser and went down by a goal to nil.

Limerick Desmond were our next opponents, this was a game we dominated in the first half, with the Desmond league pushing themselves for periods in the second half but ultimately the game remained scoreless much to the frustration of our girls.

In our final match we took on North Tipperary, eager to put more points on the board to keep the pressure on Galway and avenge defeat at the hands of North Tipperary last time out when we went down 3-1 in our first match of the NTSFL tournament. Well avenge defeat they certainly did when they were just outstanding, two goals from Jodie Griffin including a stunning free kick into the top corner and another goal from Zoe Reeves Wasik courtesy of a brilliant delivery from Kate Delaney, pinpoint from the wing over numerous players to the feet of Zoe at the far post. 3-0 to County and an excellent display by everyone of the girls on the day.

Unfortunately despite scoring five goals and conceding the solitary score, the girls would finish second only a point behind Galway. Hard luck girls, you were outstanding all day, working extremely hard for each other in attack and defence and you represented Limerick County in brilliant fashion. Well done, you can be very proud of yourselves.
